The Job of the Sower is Family Growth

Mark 3:31-4:9

Have you ever wondered why people cross your mind? Individuals you may or may not have talked to in years are now invading your every thought. It could be as simple as I wonder how they are doing or how they have been. Did you ever think that person has entered your spirit because they needed to hear a word from you or that they were thinking about you to? Could it be you have a spiritual connection because you are family? The final question is when you have reached out to talk to the person of concern, how puzzled are you when you find they have been going through untimely circumstance?

I have come to understand that from the time that individual crosses your mind to the actual conversation; it is God telling us to check on our spiritual brother or sister. In Mark 3:31, Jesus mother and brother was amongst the multitude that crowded him. Instead of working their way to him, they sent word to Jesus saying they wanted him. When Jesus received word he asked in verse 33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?" and answered the question in 34 by looking around to those that were with him saying “Here are my mother and my brothers!” He ended this chapter by saying in verse 35 “Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother."

I can help but to reflect on those words, whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother. As Christians we are anxious at times to turn our back on those who aren’t on the same page as us. However what I understand from these verses is that family isn’t perfect but being baptized into the body of Christ has allowed us to have the privilege and blessing of unconditional love. You gain a family that will be forever!

The next chapter 4, verses 1-9 talks about the sower and how he had seeds that fell on various paths. The first bunch of seed fell on the path was immediately eaten by birds. Just like the birds, Satan will come immediately take away the word, faith and or belief away. The second landed on rocky ground that didn’t have much soil and grew up quickly but was scorched by the sun. This group is happy and blessed to hear the word when it is received but when times get hard their faith is diminished or cease to exist.  The third landed with the thorns and was choked by them causing it to bear no grain; which in today’s time is those who allow the cares and desires of the world to out weigh their want of need for God. In doing so they are unable to bring others into the word of God.

The last of the seed fell on good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty fold and sixty fold and a hundredfold. Praise God for the good soil! These are the brothers and sisters who hear the word of God and accept it. They cultivate what they are learned and bless others by spreading the new of God. In closing understand how these scriptures work together. In order to claim your spiritual family, your Christian brothers and sister, you have to cultivate your spirit by feeding it the word of God and feasting on it. In doing so you will find yourself spreading the news to everyone you know because of the blessings you have received. You will also be a blessing to others because in having a full spirit that overflows, you will know when your brothers or sister need you. It is our job to be the sower who doesn’t mingle with only those in the same category as themselves but to reach back and pull others out of their situations so they can know God and grow spiritually as well. Hallelujah to God!
